Were back in Quito

After Pujili the road climbed really steeply to 4100 meters. It was absolutely great to be on the road and getting deep into the country. We must have been quite a novelty for the locals - two 'mature ladies' on mountain bikes! - you try and respond to the greetings of the locals whilst pushing uphill!!! Still it was lovely to chat to the local children really, really warm and friendly.´

The day started beautifully sunny but soon dark clouds gathered and it started raining heavily, we weren't sure whether to stop and after uming and aahing we pushed on and continued climbing in the middle of rain, hail and a electrical storm; to start with it was a bit of an adventure but by the time we arrived to the top it wasn't so exciting any longer; luckily we were able to stop a pick up truck loaded with bags of cement and reinforcement bars which our bikes and us joined. The truck took us some of the way. By the time we got to Tigua, our destination we were absolutely soaked.

Total happiness is a really hot shower followed by canelazo, the ecuatorian equivalent to hot toddy. The canelazo, the shower and the warm welcome of the owners made up for the wet and cold. It was really heart warming to feel the love Margarita and Marco had for the place. Kath had a whale of a time looking at the construction of the house, I never knew cow dung and straw were that exciting but I do now!!!
